An odd Parade concludes this musical bestiary, as most of the creatures we met earlier promenade with pomp and nobility. The unicorn is much too shy for such a public display — and of course the sea serpent cannot very well swim the parade route — but the others are here. The regal phoenix leads the way, succeeded by the griffin, here (the lion part) evoked in a gentle dance — until the phoenix music rises once more. The dragon is confused about his entrance, though. He comes in much too soon. Blundering first into the phoenix, and then the griffin, the phoenix must assert her authority, and the dragon quiets down. Soon, the chimera's lion-head roars leisurely (recalling those earlier blustery chords), but then the firebird ascends and all the beasts vanish from sight to remain only in myth and memory.
